As many of you will know I have been waiting for my throat to be operated on for some time. At first I was on the Fast Track List to ensure it was nothing untoward. Then put on the normal list.
After a while I have now had the surgery. It was to remove a large lump and three small lumps which were all attached to my thyroid. The big lump was attached to my wind pipe and the right hand thyroid gland. It was also covering the voice box nerve which we had hoped would not be affected. Unfortunately it has been slightly damaged and my voice is currently very weak. So if you need me, it is best to either listen very carefully when I get to somewhere quiet, or message me.
I am going for a check up on the 25th July so hopefully will see what can be done about my voice then. I am hoping it will come back gradually. The main thing is the lumps have now been removed, so I dont feel like Im chocking anymore, especially when I lay down.
Im very optomistic, as always, and will do whatever is necessary to get my voice back. Its just quite frustrating at the moment. Whilst watching the World Cup, I cant cheer of course, and throwing your arms up or punching the air in excitement just doesnt do it for me!
Ill give you an update when I have one. Fingers crossed.

At the beginning of May this year I was lucky to be able to go to Mauritius. It was my dream holiday since I was just 16. I had been to the cinema when I first saw it as a trailer. Absolutely gorgeous. Some 40 years later I was treated to my dream holiday. I couldnt believe it.
It is so beautiful, everything I expected. We were in the north west of the island and stayed in The WestinHotel, Turtle Bay, near Balaclava. The hotel was to die for and the staff are absolutely wonderful. Not at all pushy, just there in the background when you need them. So polite.
We went on a small sea plane and flew over part of the island. I managed to get some amazing photographs and videos. I saw several sea turtles from the air which apparently does not happen very often. They were huge!
We also went swimming with wild dolphins in the ocean. I so wish we had a GoPro camera as it was fantastic. You could even hear the clicking. And the fish swimming around us was just breattaking. Ill put a couple of photos in the Gallery so you can see something of it.
Not a very long holiday but one which will stay with me forever.

Today I want you all to know just what may be happening to your toe nails.
Fungal nail infections can affect all or part of the nail including the nail plate, nail bed and root The infection is slow to develop and affected nails may first appear thickened and discoloured, turning white, black, yellow or green. If left untreated, nails can later become brittle and distorted in shape. The toenails are more commonly affected than the fingernails.
Fungal nail infections often start as a skin infection, such as athlete's foot, before spreading to the nail. An infection is occasionally caused by other types of fungi, such as candida.
There are several risk factors that can trigger an infection. These include wearing shoes that cause feet to become hot and sweaty and being in a humid environment. Certain health conditions, such as diabetes or psoriasis, also increase the risk of infection as they can damage the nail or skin, allowing infection to set in.
Fungal nail infections can be treated and usually cured, but some treatments can take many months to work, so you need to be patient. As a Nail Tech I would advise a client to visit a chemist or doctor who can provide antifungal medicines. If these medicines do not work, patients may wish to undergo laser treatment to destroy the fungus. If the case is particulary severe then surgery to remove the nail is also an option.
A Nail Tech can identify but not diagnose, so I would always refer to a doctor if in doubt.

'Im hoping to undertake another course soon. It's for a special eyebrow tint which lasts considerably longer than the norm. It's specially for clients with sparse or patchy eyebrows, as the tint is able to be applied directly to the skin and gives a 3D effect too. I can't wait to do this. I will tell you more about it when Im booked on the course. Its amazing.

We use lots of terms to describe the condition of nails such as brittle and flexible, but its easy for these to be misunderstood, so its time to put the spotlight back on the main properties of natural nails.
HARDNESS - This is the nails resistance to scratching or denting of the surface. Nail plates that are too hard are more likey to break or split and will also be brittle. On the other hand, (excuse the pun) nail plates that are too soft are easily scratched, stained and are likely to peel. A healthy nail plate is firm but not overly hard. Many clients use a nail strengthener the minute their nails begin to break, but this isnt the solution as it will ony cause the nails to break further - nail strengtheners should only be used on weak, thin and flexible nails.
STRENGTH - This is the nail plates ability to resist breaking under heavy weight or impact. Nail plates need to be strong in order to resist the physical trauma we put them through on a daily basis. If the load gets too much then we want the nail to break so as not to cause greater injury. Strength is important, but it must be balanced with flexibility.
FLEXIBILITY - This is the ability of a nail plate to bend and absorb load or impact. If its not flexible then the nail would result in cracks, breaks or chips. Healthy nail plates are highly flexible and will bend rather than break. However, too much flexibility equates to thin nails. Clients with thin nails should avoid buffing the surface to avoid making the nails thinner. Age, diet and prolonged exposure to chemicals etc, moisture, heat and cold can all affect flexibility.
TOUGHNESS - If strength and flexibility are in balance, the result is a tough, durable nail plate. The daily use of nail oils can improve flexibility and help restore toughness.
WEAR - Aggressive or heavy-handed filing can quickly wear away the nail pate, creating thinner nails.
Your nail technician will consider what grade of file to use for your particular type of nail. She will also advise the correct treatments and aftercare to prevent further damage and help promote healthy, balanced natural nails.

Well since my last blog, ive been on jury service which was quite interesting. It was when the solar eclipse happened and I found it quite funny walking through Manchester seeing people standing still, staring up into the sky and even the traffic was slower. Though heading into the centre of Manchester each day reminded me why I got out of that rat race many years ago. But it is much easier by tram rather than the old trains to victoria I used to have to get !
We've decorated the salon a little and I'm about to pick up my renewed A Board. I just thought it was far too fussy before. Also with the wind we have had over the last couple of years, it need redoing, after being blown over several times.
Ive also just returned from a trip to France. That was such a long long drive. We know where to stay and not to stay too in future. I dont know if you've ever been to La Rochelle, but it is beautiful. We will definately go there again to break the journey up.
Unfortunately Ive returned with a bad back! I dont know if it was the long journey or because I did so much on Saturday in the salon, or even the heavy shutter on the salon window hmmm. Note to self, get it greased again.
I'm on the look out for more Gelish colours, so if you are looking for something in particular, let me know. I always find it difficult to choose new colours that everyone will like. Also Ive started doing GEL sculptured extensions again. These are particularly good for people with their hands in water a lot or chemicals ie hairdressers. You can even have the gel as an overlay on your natural nail, so if you have the length but not the strength, then this is ideal for you. The Gelish can also be applied over the top of gel, the same as acrylics.
Well I'm hoping the weather will pick up soon, we are in May afterall. Looking forward to seeing you in the salon.

I recently did Jury Service which was a lot more tiring than I thought it would be.

Well the gorgeous summer appears to be over,
So! Its time to get you hair removal done for good! The IPL (Intense Pulse Light) hair removal and skin rejuvenation machine is in full swing. We are getting great results. If you have noticed your skin has now got blemishes or sun spots etc then we can sort that out too.
Also dont forget to keep looking after your feet. We've worked hard getting them nice and soft during the summer, so keep it up. When you are snuggling up together, its so nice to have lovely soft feet rather than rough ones.
I will soon have some very useful items in the salon to aid advertising too. Keep a look out, come in and visit us and get pampered. We are so good at it.

Well I've now been working in Esteem Hair & Beauty for a year and the salon has been getting busier and busier which I'm very pleased about. Not as many gaps in the diary to fill lately. I'm changing things slightly in the salon, decorating the beauty room and slight alterations in the nail bar area coming up too.
Gelish is just as popular as acrylics now and of course, as expected, the lovely summery colours are being used up so quickly! Having to get new stock weekly.
Due to the lovely weather, holidays etc pedicures are a very popular service right now too.
Ive also introduced IPL permanent hair removal now, so hoping to get more clients booked in for that. It's amazing! I've only had two treatments of it on my underarms and there is hardly anything left now. Maybe one more treatment, possibly two and it will be all gone. No more shaving! Yay! Bikini line next haha.
Call for your free session and consultation of IPL and see how good it is for you! No more shaving, waxing or ingrown hairs.
